Getting Organized

With all of the projects that I'm currently working on I thought that it was time to get myself organized, starting with the kitchen. Now I'm not an organized person by nature, so this is something that I really have to work at. But for the first time ever, it's actually become fun. This is no doubt due to my new label maker, an impulse buy from Costco.com last month (at a rock bottom price of $9.00 shipped). That was probably the best $9.00 I've spent in a long time, and I'm sure that my husband will agree. I single-handedly labeled dozens of jars and crocks of different flours, sugars, spices and grains. I was in labeling heaven!

It feels so good to work in the kitchen now, with everything in it's place and easy to find. This makes it so much easier to move from project to project, which is exactly what I needed. I know that I still have some other cabinets left to tackle, but if the kitchen is any indication of what is to come, I look forward to the challenge.

Next up: replacing most of my plastic storage containers with glass.

This is fantastic. I need a little pantry like this in my kitchen. My counter is quickly reaching it's jar maximum.

I wish I had a legit label maker - I usually deal with multitudes of post-its @_@

nice work! doesn't it feel great to be organized? my cupboards are really disastrous! I try to stay on top of it... but it doesn't look nearly as snazzy as yours does! If you ever need a vacation in Santa Cruz... just bring along your label maker and you can stay for free! ha!

That's exactly what I'm wanting to do but I just haven't find the right jars yet. Good for you - it looks great.

I went crazy with my label maker at first! Now I just need more containers for all my flours & spices!

I just did this today too! (sans the label maker, I make do with a sharpie!) And boy, it really does feel good!

Awesome job! I am a labeler freak, so my pantry looks almost identical to yours, sans those really cool containers :)

I love your organized kitchen! I love it when I have an organized kitchen. I actually just did mine today. Sadly I'm not generally an organized person (I try, but it's just not in my nature) and I have to re-organize on a VERY regular basis :P

I've been looking for glass canisters like that with wide mouths. Where did you get yours?

I desperately need to organize my kitchen! I am NOT an organized person my nature either and my kitchen is really small with horrible cabinets that fit NOTHING IN THEM! I also only have 2 drawers in the entire kitchen! Good job here..

btw, I am sooo into grinding my own flours now.. I'm using my vitamix, but maybe some day I'll get the fabulous grainmill you have. I covet your grainmill! lol

Re: wide mouth jars... I've been buying jumbo jars of olives and pickles at GFS (Gordon Food Service, Canada and eastern U.S.; and no, I have no connection with them!). Anyway, cheap snacks but best of all, great reusable jars for flours, etc.!

I love the organization in your cupboards! I have been meaning to do the same, but the lazy me takes over and I end up putting the task aside (and I love to organize!!!). I too, am in the process of replacing plastic with glass. Now, I just need a nifty label maker and I'm all set!

Another good idea is to put the date on the jar too. Especially for things that spoil over several months like flour.
I also label my spices and generally replace any older than a year.
I'm always surpised when I dig in the far back of my pantry, I usually find something really old like "Jasmine rice Jan. 2007."
